Kyuka Ventures tackles Uganda’s plastic waste crisis and energy poverty. Uganda generates 600 tons of plastic waste daily, with only 5% recycled, leaving 570 tons to pollute ecosystems and release greenhouse gases (NEMA, 2018). Meanwhile, 90% of households rely on firewood or charcoal, contributing to deforestation and 31,600 annual deaths from indoor air pollution (WHO, 2021). Using our patented “Soot-Free Reactive Extraction Technology,” we recycle 40–50 tons of plastic monthly into clean LPG, reducing emissions by 91% and offering fuel 42% cheaper at $1.03/L. This innovation prevents 3.5 million kg of CO2 emissions and saves 450 acres of forest annually. We’ve employed 300 marginalized workers and empowered 750 households to access health insurance through plastic waste with our “Waste Insure” program. By 2030, we aim to recycle 10 million tons of plastic, provide clean energy to 100,000 households, and create 1,000 green jobs, advancing Uganda’s sustainability goals.
Kyuka Ventures is my response to Uganda’s pressing crises of plastic pollution and energy poverty. Uganda generates 600 tons of plastic waste daily, with only 5% recycled, leaving 570 tons to clog ecosystems, pollute water bodies, and release harmful greenhouse gases (NEMA, 2018). Simultaneously, 90% of households depend on firewood or charcoal for cooking, contributing to deforestation at a rate of 3.5% annually and causing 31,600 deaths from indoor air pollution, particularly among women and children (WHO, 2021).
To address these challenges, I created the patented “Soot-Free Reactive Extraction Technology” (SFRET), which processes 40–50 tons of plastic monthly into clean LPG. This technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 91% compared to conventional fuels and provides LPG at $1.03 per liter, making it 42% cheaper than alternatives. Annually, this prevents 3.5 million kg of CO2 emissions and conserves 450 acres of forest, delivering affordable energy to underserved households.
Beyond environmental impact, Kyuka Ventures fosters social change. We’ve created over 300 green jobs by sourcing plastic waste from marginalized women and youth, who earn UGX 500 per kilogram. Additionally, our innovative “Waste Insure” program enables 750 households to exchange plastic waste for health insurance, improving public health and encouraging organized waste management.
By 2030, I aim to recycle 10 million tons of plastic, supply clean LPG to 100,000 households, and create 1,000 green jobs. This project is a scalable and sustainable solution that addresses Uganda’s waste management and energy needs while aligning with the country’s sustainability goals under the Paris Agreement. My vision is to transform waste into opportunity, creating a cleaner environment, healthier communities, and a brighter future.
