GLED – Reusable LED Bulb with Replaceable LED cartridge

LED bulb saves electricity over incandescent bulbs but are they really environmentally friendly? Present LED bulbs are 90% plastic and have an average life of 2 years and weighs more than 50 gm. By 2030 there will be an estimated 70 billion LED lighting points which will need 35 billion replacements and the failed LED bulbs as e-waste of over 2 billion kg each year and growing @ 10%. All this is because LED bulbs cannot be viably repaired as their components are soldered, screwed, glued and machine pressed. This has created a forced financial burden to sustain the lighting at home and work-places, to our marginalized community, remember 10% of world population still sleep hungry as per UN. More-over these failed LED bulbs not only add to the e-waste but also make irresponsible consumption and production of plastic and aluminum required to manufacture these LED bulbs. The given GLED addresses the UNSDG 12 and 13

OBJECTIVE
The present-day LED bulbs have got their prices reduced with unnoticed reduction in their warranty from 4 years to just 1 year and claimed life from 50000 hours to 10000 hours. this has reduced the average life of LED bulb to 2 years.
Any LED Bulb which fails, needs only the replacement of its PCB or LEDs. The bulb body made up of ABS plastic and aluminum can last for more than 20 years and constitutes over 90% weight and volume of its bulb. We need to have a bulb wherein PCB / LEDs circuit can be replaced easily by the consumer, thereby reducing replacement cost and avoiding plastic and aluminum part to go in waste. Saving of material for replacement, will reduce global warming, earn carbon credits and help India achieve its Carbon Neutral Pledge.

Innovation
Existing LED bulb parts are soldered, glued, screwed and machine pressed together. The bulb cannot be dismantled into individual parts, with bare hands or without help of an expert. Even if the parts are separated, the same can be assembled together only by an expert and require tools like Screw- Driver, Soldering iron and Soldering roll, Thermal Adhesive Paste, and Parts which are not easy to procure at local markets.

Innovative GLED Reusable LED bulb has innovative Design making the Outer components of LED bulb material reusable and the inner component replaceable in the event of bulb failure. Only the faulty PCB Driver and LED Plate (henceforth together called as LED-PCBA-Cartridge), needs to be replaced, in an easy press fit and lock system without use of any tools and special expertise. It is as easy as replacing a SIM card of the Mobile phones.

This replacement of the LED-PCBA Cartridge helps reduction of replacement cost of the failed bulbs by 75% to the customers keeping the sustainable lighting at home and workplaces of all individuals.
Each GLED cartridge used instead of buying a new LED bulb for replacement saves 1/2 kg of CO2 emission and 10 liters of water required in the production of one LED bulb.
